At Eight Mile Plains State School the Physical Education Program has been developed to progress students through the different skill levels from Prep to year 6. In years Prep to year 3 there is a focus upon gross motor development whilst years 4 – 6 continue to develop skills through a variety of sports, games and activities which encourage the development of a healthy mind and body.

All students are encouraged to participate fully in the Physical Education Program, whether it is, during scheduled lessons, or the classrooms Smart Moves Program.

The Smart Moves Program requires students to participate in moderate exercise for the duration of thirty minutes per day as conducted by the classroom teacher.

Sports Carnivals

Eight Mile Plains holds two annual sports carnivals. Cross Country is held in term 1 and all students participate from Prep to Year 6 at varying levels and course modifications. A shield will be awarded to the winning house for the cross country.  Students are provided with in class training sessions prior to this event being held. Students are allocated a sports house team upon enrolment at Eight Mile Plains and every student that participates on the day scores points towards their “house team” either Logan (green) or Underwood (blue).

The annual Sports Day carnival is held during Term 2 and comprises of track and field events, as well as tabloid and relay events. All students from Prep to year 6 compete on this day, with a shield awarded to the winning team (Logan or Underwood).  Medallions are also awarded to age champions.
Students from years 5 and 6 are then selected to compete in the Mt Gravatt District Athletics carnival.

Swimming

All students from Prep to year 2 are invited to participate in the schools swimming program which is held at the end of term 4. The program is conducted by qualified swimming instructors at the Rackley Swim School in Runcorn.

Students are transported to and from the centre by chartered buses. Swimming is held during term 4 to give the students an intensive program just before the summer holidays when many families spend time at swimming pools and beaches.

At Eight Mile Plains State School, students are encouraged to “have a go” and participate in all activities in a fun and non-threatening environment, helping to provide students with the necessary skills to maintain a healthy and positive outlook on life throughout their school years and into adulthood.
